HoloKit is like Google Cardboard for augmented reality

Image
The revelation behind Google Cardboard was that if you put your phone close enough to your eyes, it’s basically a VR headset — but it’s not quite that simple for mixed reality setups like Microsoft’s HoloLens. Or is it? HoloKit is an extremely clever DIY solution for a quick and dirty augmented reality experience with a bare minimum of equipment.                   The idea is really quite simple: Instead of a costly projection system, a pair of mirrors reflects the display of a smartphone onto an angled, semi-transparent Fresnel lens — so you see both the image and the world behind it. Meanwhile, the phone is in position to use its camera and sensors to track the world in front of you....

With Microsoft’s Face Swap, search with Bing for your next morphing muse

Image
Face-swapping —                Taking your image and adjusting it to fit on to a different body, creature or object — has taken the photo app world by storm, as millions of people look for new and novel things to do with their selfies. Microsoft is the latest company to enter the fray. The company’s in-house app studio Microsoft Garage has quietly launched a new app — the aptly called Face Swap.                The Android app is now live in the U.S., Australia and Canada, with plans to expand to India and iOS in the coming weeks, a spokesperson tells us.                Part image search engine, and part photo editing toolkit, you take a pic of yourself, adjust it a little, and then use keywords to find an image where you can replace the face with yours either from ...

ReMarkable's e-ink tablet is ready to take over your sketchpad

Image
The Kindle can display books just fine, but it can't be used to jot down notes. E-ink refresh rates are generally terrible. The Norwegian startup ReMarkable has made its own tablet that aims to make sketching on e-ink feel smooth and lag-free. And, hey, it really works.              Big e-ink tablets remain a pretty niche market. Sony's Digital Paper is ReMarkable's biggest competition (we haven't tried Sony's latest tablet yet for comparison). According to CEO Magnus Wanberg and Chief Design Officer Mats Holberg, their tablet is about finding a way to write without feeling overconnected. Or, capturing digital sketches without having all the other apps and gear.                                                      ...

Samsung Galaxy C10 Photo Leak Tips New Dual Camera Setup Design

Image
Earlier this month, a leaked render indicated that the rumoured Samsung Galaxy C10 might beat the Galaxy Note 8 to become the first smartphone from the company to feature a dual camera setup. It seems that this might indeed be the case as another leaked render of the upcoming Samsung smartphone suggests that the phone will feature two camera sensors at the back.                           The newly leaked Samsung Galaxy C10 renders, obtained by OnLeaks and PriceBaba, interestingly show a different camera setup design than the one shown in previous renders. As per the new renders, the LED flash will be situated on the side of the dual cameras while the earlier renders suggested that LED flash is situated right ...
